The Society of Medical Friends of Wine was founded in 1939 by Leon D. Adams, a noted authority on the Wines of America.
His vision for the
Society was to bring doctors from the Northern California area together in membership in order to stimulate scientific research on wine, develop an understanding of wine's beneficial effects, and to encourage an appreciation of the conviviality and good fellowship that are a part of the relaxed and deliberate manner of living that follows its proper use.
For more than 50 years this organization has successfully pursued the goals proposed by its founder and today numbers more
than 300 active and
emeritus members from the medical and dental professions. Dinner meetings are held four times per year and in the fall a tour of selected wineries helps keep the members current with trends in the wine industry.
Every other year the Society holds a major tasting of California wines
in San Francisco where more than 100 wines, generally the most recent releases of invited California wineries, can be experienced. In addition, the Society has contributed financially, through a biennial Research Award, to the recognition and furtherance of significant research in connection with wine and its contribution to health.
The Society publishes a semiannual Bulletin which contains reprints of
the addresses made before the membership at quarterly meetings and other news of importance to the Society. Nonmembers who are interested in receiving a copy of the Bulletin may subscribe for $10 per year.
Mr. Adams is now deceased, but the organization he founded continues to thrive. Applications for membership from qualified
professionals are
accepted each year, and forms may be requested from this office or from members of the Society. We appreciate your interest in our Society and welcome the opportunity to be of further service.`
