History

The Society of Medical Friends of Wine was founded in 1939 by Leon D. Adams, a noted authority on the Wines of America. His vision for the Society was to bring doctors from the Northern California area together in membership in order to stimulate scientific research on wine, develop an understanding of wine's beneficial effects, and to encourage an appreciation of the conviviality and good fellowship that are a part of the relaxed and deliberate manner of living that follows its proper use.

For more than 70 years this organization has successfully pursued the  goals proposed by its founder and today numbers more than 150, within the Bay Area, of active and emeritus members from the medical and dental professions. Dinner meetings are held four times per year and in the fall a tour of selected wineries helps keep the members current with trends in the wine industry. Scientific speakers are invited to address the dinner meetings and at least one educational wine tasting event is held annually.

Mr. Adams is now deceased, but the organization he founded continues to thrive. Applications for membership from qualified professionals are accepted each year, and forms may be requested from this office or from members of the Society. We appreciate your interest in our Society and welcome the opportunity to be of further service.`
