Moderate wine consumption decreases the risk of age-related macular degeneration.
The first National Health Nutrition and Examination Survey is a periodic survey conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics, a branch of the
Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Household interviews were initiated in 1971. A subset sample of 3072 men and women, 45 to 74 years of age, completed an alcohol consumption questionnaire and received an ophthalmologic
examination. Of the three alcohol types studied in multivariate regression analysis - adjusted for age, gender, income, heart failure, and hypertension - only wine consumption showed a statistically significant negative
association with age-related macular degeneration. (Odds ratio 0.81; 95% confidence interval 0.67-0.99.)
